About This Project

In addition to its stunning views, the apartment rooftop features a serene outdoor oasis complete with a vertical garden, a wooden archway, and a tranquil water feature. Furthermore, stylish seating arrangements, including a sectional sofa surrounded by lush greenery, create a modern and inviting atmosphere. Plus, a cozy fire table enhances relaxation, making it a perfect gathering spot.

In a resident-commercial building in Bellevue — retail below, apartments above — residents had no private outdoor space whatsoever. The rooftop was structurally available but completely undeveloped: no warmth, no identity, no reason to be there.

We were tasked with transforming this blank rooftop into something residents would genuinely seek out — a layered outdoor oasis that functions as a true extension of home life above the city.

Our Design Approach

We anchored the design with warmth from the ground up: wood plank decking that introduces natural texture underfoot. Fireplaces were positioned to create intimate zones within the larger footprint, making the space genuinely usable on the cool Pacific Northwest evenings that define Bellevue’s climate. A generous seating area was arranged to encourage both conversation and quiet solitude.

The plant strategy was as intentional as any interior decision. We designed a layered transition between outdoor and indoor plant selections that softens the urban environment and creates the sensation of a garden retreat high above the street.
